1.
Trickery is a soothing tool. Soothing aching tooth aches, cavities and chalky voids.
2.
Daily life is laden with rotting pores, gaping and wide. These pores are life’s hiccups of all miscellanies. Suddenly looming, gigantic, thorned vines, they sprout like weeds from what once seemed insignificant seeds. Hardly identifiable to the eye, painless, microscopically non-interfering.
3.
As always happens, they build up, are watered, and suddenly catalyse. A series of small fissures crumbling away at enamel. A series of micro eruptions of coloured chemicals responding to each other, in wars of fizzing hate and love.
4.
What was a scratch is now a canyon. Months of pretence through laid back self-care and a swig of mouthwash here and there stretch and swell into an inescapable sinkhole. It swallows you.
5.
Oh for another period of life spent feebly climbing out of that cluster. Tying together fragile ladders, grabbing at roots that give way. Rebuilding and ‘growing’. Laughing bitterly at the parody life you were living through giant, bubblegum pink sunnies. A hyper satirical puppet show.
6.
Trickery is a soothing tool. An ointment. Trickery is peppermint. A paraffin, chemical candle. A syrupy throat sweet. Trickery is sugar dopamine. Always a headache. Face mist. Coffee bought, not made. Bubbles caressing warm bathwater. Moisturising cracked legs. Vaseline. Wine. Garnish on a weekday dinner. A book bought for the cover.
7.
Trickery is the documentation of a fleeting moment; a smile, a meal untouched, a snapshot of a landscape. The full picture escapes and runs through back passes, a sneaky villain. The entirety cannot exist as a snap, and it spills out. It is water that inexplicably seeps from cement between bricks in old walls. The presentation, the spectacle, is the sum of fleeting parts, not the whole reality.
8.
The trickery is an act of soothing; a double deception. Ointment slathered on ointment slathered on ointment, until friction ceases to exist and everything slips away. The curtain falls down.
9.
There’s a hunter gatherer desire to seek beauty in everything. To wait it out, let it reveal itself, stare deep and with unmoving concentration until a grey sky finally decides it’s stormy lavender like the first moments of an electric storm. But really it’s just rainy Britain.
10.
Trickery soothes the urge. It models prey from a bathroom tile you want desperately to be pretty. To gleam pearl like and bounce light like diamonds. To become the inner surface of an oyster shell and project you to the coast. Forcibly, everything becomes enchanted.
11.
Trickery is temporal soothing. It is an act of denial known to ourselves and often blatant to others. It isn’t venomous or strongly dangerous. The act of seeking beauty in the mundane is a slippery slope. Like trying to suck drink up a straw when there’s hardly any dredges remaining. Craving a drop more, a lingering taste. More from something already given in its full capacity. A different ending. Many endings.
12.
Trickery is a garment fashioned out of a desire to elevate the day to day. To escape the repetitive essence of the repeated. To stew elaborately embroidered threads into the cycle. To edge motion out of still, flowers out of corporate carpet, sun from thickly cloud-doused skies.
